Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Why not treat yourself to a trip to the theatre? David Tennant is still out of Hamlet, although currently hopes to be back for the last week of the run. He’s quoted on the RSC site as saying “I am very sorry to disappoint anyone who booked to come and see me in Hamlet, but confident that you will be far from disappointed by Edward Bennett’s performance in the title role. He is one of British theatre’s most promising talents and an opportunity to see his Hamlet, alongside the brilliant ensemble of actors that I have had the great pleasure of working with all year, is very exciting. So you don’t just have to take my word for it – Ed’s Hamlet is fantastic!

Also recently commenting on Ed’s change in role is Michael Boyd, Chief Artistic Director of the RSC, when asked about an understudy taking on a lead role:
It’s like three-dimensional chess. You can’t screw up the production. You have to be roughly in the same place at the same time. But you also have to inhabit the role. Edward Bennett, for instance, is completely different to David Tennant – he has a different metabolism and he has been doing brilliantly as Hamlet.

Tennant still away

It has been confirmed that David Tennant will not be returning to Hamlet before Christmas due to a prolapsed disc which he is soon to receive surgery to correct. Read the RSC statement.

David Tennant said today: “It is hugely disappointing for me to have to miss these performances. My back problem has progressed to the point where it is currently impossible for me to carry on without surgery. I want to get back onstage as quickly as possible and I am very grateful to Ed who has courageously got to grips with the role but in a much shorter time. It’s a fantastic achievement.”

Best wishes to David at this time.
